Welcoming the New Year

As 2024 begins, we here at Realtime Robotics wanted to take a moment to thank every one of our employees, partners, customers, investors, and anyone else that helped contribute to a successful year that was. Like any technology company today, we experienced our ups and downs this past year, but we’re excited about what we’ve accomplished – and about the promise of the new year.

But first, a few brief highlights from 2023:

  • To start us off, this past June we announced that the company had secured an additional $9.5 million in funding from Shinhan GIB and Kyobo Life Insurance. The industrial manufacturing industry has had a strong response to our RapidPlan robotics motion control and collision avoidance software – and this funding reflected that increasing demand. Because programming and integration can account for up to 50-70% of the cost of a robot application, innovative approaches to automation and robotics – such as RapidPlan – are needed to help manufacturers reduce these costs.
  • Speaking of RapidPlan, this year Realtime Robotics was also named an official supplier for BMW Group, who used our technology to speed robot programming time, autonomously generating collision-free robot movements. Automotive product and solution supplier The Schaeffler Group also signed on to use RapidPlan to improve throughput and robot cell automation in a multi-robot bin-picking application.
  • Later in the year we saw another milestone for Realtime Robotics – the launch of our Optimization-as-a-Service product. This solution uses a combination of proprietary software and our team’s experienced robotics and application engineering insights to improve the productivity of a manufacturer’s workcells. The solution has already proven to be very popular in the industry, with Volkswagen signing on as early adopter and HLS as an integration partner. Watch this space for more news on that front!

We’re all looking forward to a bright 2024, as we continue to expand our optimization solution throughout the industry, and look at other similar ways we can use our robotics expertise and proprietary software to shave time off of programming robots and manufacturing products.

So, once again, thanks to all for a wonderful 2023 – and here’s to our collective success in 2024 – Cheers!

Realtime Robotics Launches Optimization Service to Help Manufacturers Quickly Reduce Cycle Time

Innovative Service Optimizes Robot Paths and Interlocks Without Impacting Existing Processes

BOSTON – November 13, 2023 Realtime Robotics, the leader in collision-free autonomous motion planning for industrial robots, today announced the launch of its new Optimization-as-a-Service solution. The solution uses a combination of proprietary optimization software and experienced robotics and application engineering insights to improve a manufacturer’s overall productivity.

Realtime Robotics’ innovative optimization service was recently used by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover, Germany, in a proof-of-concept project for electric vehicle manufacturing. The company was looking to quickly and efficiently improve the cycle time in a 2-robot cell that was welding car doors for the ID. Buzz vehicle line.

Optimization-as-a-Service analyzes a customer’s existing digital twin, identifying bottleneck areas and recommending improvements based on the customer’s desired parameters. Realtime analyzed Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ simulation file without stopping or interfering with ongoing production. The solution’s recommendations helped the automotive manufacturer to incorporate improvements and reduce cycle time by several seconds.

“Our Optimization-as-a-Service offering delivers results when you cannot spend months squeezing more productivity out of your automation cells,” said Peter Howard, CEO of Realtime Robotics. “It has the potential to forever change how manufacturing operations are conducted, optimizing for improved speed and efficiency, without interrupting existing processes.”

Realtime Robotics’ Optimization-as-a-Service can rapidly generate and test hundreds of thousands of potential robot paths, determining the best motion sequences based on target assignment, robot reach, and other parameters. Automatically calculated interlocks allow robots to operate within much closer proximity.

Customers need only send Realtime their simulation CAD file for the bottlenecked cells. The company’s engineers will then use proprietary algorithms and expertise to optimize the workcell in just weeks, reducing cycle times with better paths and sequences. Once the results are validated, they can immediately be transferred to the production floor.

Getting more out of existing or new automation helps manufacturers, including major automotive companies, consistently exceed revenue goals. See Realtime Make Advanced Robotic Bin Picking Possible at PACK EXPO 2023!

The annual PACK EXPO Las Vegas event brings together some of the leading minds in logistics, packaging and processing to highlight some of the most innovative technologies and game-changing solutions that will define the industry’s future.

This year, I’ll have the honor of representing Realtime Robotics at the event, as we’ll be joining our partners Mitsubishi Electric in booth #N-10011 to highlight how our motion planning and collision avoidance technology can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of customers’ logistics operations.

Onsite Demo

There will be a 3D bin picking robot demo at the booth, showing the combined power of our collision avoidance and dynamic path planning technology with 3D vision technology from SICK, Inc. in a 3-robot work cell that uses RV-4FRLD, RV-7FRLD and RV-8CRL robots from Mitsubishi.

The demo will show how the technologies and equipment work together to transfer randomly placed energy bars from one tote to the other as quickly and efficiently as possible. To do this correctly, multiple robots will need to occupy adjacent spaces. They are very closely mounted, increasing the possibility of a collision if their paths are not dynamically calculated and updated.

Traditionally, multi-robot systems utilize manual, programmed robot handshaking and “reserved interference zones.” These systems are not usually space or throughput optimized. 3D bin picking adds another layer of complexity to the situation, since the geometry of each part is random, meaning the paths the robots must take to approach the part and depart once acquiring it are much more complex. For example, a new image should be acquired and analyzed after each part is picked (in case there was an unexpected position shift of any of the remaining parts).

Realtime Robotics is featuring its RapidPlan software on an IPC to plan and control the 3 robots, based on input from SICK’s PLB 3D Guidance Platform (which is capable of CAD matching, geometric matching, edge matching and deep learning). The system also features safety light curtains from SICK.

This system will decrease programming time, decrease modification time, improve throughput and utilize floor space more efficiently. If you’re at the event this Sept. 11-13, I encourage you to stop by and see the full demo cell in action – it truly has the potential to change how the logistics industry operates.

Speaking Presentation

On September 12th at 4:00 pm PT in the Central Hall on Stage 3 (C-2508), I will be joining Mitsubishi Electric’s product marketing manager for mechatronics, Patrick Varley, and SICK’s business and technical consultant for industrial robotics, Nick Longworth, for a presentation entitled “The Next Evolution of 3D Bin Picking: Multiple Collision-Free Robots.” We will discuss how the combination of 3D vision for robotic guidance, dynamic path planning, and collision avoidance can work together to increase throughput and reduce the footprint needed to deploy industrial robots.

The presentation will delve deeper into the ways these technologies work together to solve the longstanding problems surrounding the creation and operation of multi-robot cells. Join us to hear more about the ways your organization can take advantage of the latest technologies to speed operations and increase throughput. I look forward to seeing you there.

Realtime Robotics Selected for JETRO Investment Program

Japan’s External Trade Organization Recognizes the Ability of Realtime’s Motion Control Technology to Help Expand the Use of Industrial Robotics

BOSTON and TOKYO – July 5, 2023 Realtime Robotics, the leader in collision-free autonomous motion planning for industrial robots, today announced that the Japan External Trade Organization, or JETRO, has selected the company for a prestigious government subsidy program called the “Subsidy for Projects to Stimulate Direct Investment in Japan.” Realtime has been selected by the organization to “expand the use of industrial robots and promote the standardization of system integrator operations.”

JETRO is a government-related organization that works to promote mutual trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world. Originally established in 1958 to promote Japanese exports abroad, JETRO’s core focus in the 21st century has shifted toward promoting foreign direct investment into Japan and helping small to medium size Japanese firms maximize their global export potential.

Realtime Robotics is currently developing a pair of robotics applications with key partners, aimed at making industrial automation easier and faster to deploy. These will be accelerated as a part of the JETRO program:

  • FANUC: Realtime Robotics is working with automation and robotics equipment partner FANUC on a plug-in enabling Realtime’s robot programming and motion control software, RapidPlan, to be operated directly within FANUC’s simulation software, ROBOGUIDE.The plug-in will allow users to configure a ROBOGUIDE as usual, including the layout, robot selection and end-of-arm tooling, and then transfer it directly to RapidPlan. This makes it possible for users to send a sequenced list of positions necessary for robots to complete an application, which RapidPlan can then use to calculate optimal collision-free paths for the robots to execute. This eliminates the need for the tedious and repetitive manual analysis of robot motion paths, traditionally required in order to insert waypoints or robot-to-robot interlocks in different parts of the program to avoid collisions.
  • DENSO: Denso, a global production systems provider, is evaluating how Realtime Robotics’ RapidPlan can help improve its own flexible production units.Denso’s multi-robot cell product, DX-CELL, helps manufacturers accommodate an increasing amount of variable product needs by making it easier to change the robot layout as needed. Denso expects that with RapidPlan, DX-CELL customers will be able to complete robot programming much more easily and quickly.

Denso and Realtime are also working to expand the collaboration to additional applications, such as multi-robot assembly, inspection and bin picking, as improving efficiency will become even more important as the use of industrial robots expands across several different industries.

“It is an exciting time for manufacturing and robotics companies – and those who work with them,” said Koji Kobayashi, Vice President of Business Development, Japan, at Realtime Robotics. “New, innovative technologies, such as our RapidPlan software, are opening the door to previously unheard of levels of automation efficiency and effectiveness. We’re thrilled to work with JETRO and partners such as FANUC and DENSO to transform what is possible within industrial robotics.”

Realtime Robotics Funded an Additional $9.5 Million to Meet Increased Demand for Technology that Transforms Manufacturing

Industry’s Renewed Focus on Innovative Approaches to Automation and Robotics Drive Demand for Company’s Software

Realtime to Demo Its RapidPlan Robot Motion Planning and Programming Software at Automatica 2023

BOSTON and MUNICH – June 27, 2023 Realtime Robotics, the leader in collision-free autonomous motion planning for industrial robots, today announced that it has secured an additional $9.5 million in funding from Shinhan GIB and Kyobo Life Insurance.

Driven by the strong response to its RapidPlan industrial robotics motion control and collision avoidance software, Realtime will use this additional investment to drive further product enhancements, incorporate feedback from customers and partners, and scale to support additional go-to-market efforts.

RapidPlan reduces the annual costs of robotic automation by two-thirds and makes the robot programming process up to 5x faster, all while eliminating collisions and removing the majority of manual, time-consuming adjustments. This delivers a strong ROI across both existing applications and a very broad range of new ones. The additional funding will also help pave the way for streamlining additional time-to-value for customers.

“Manufacturers need to accelerate their adoption of robotics – and quickly realize a return on that investment – in order to improve their ability to adapt and compete in today’s industry,” said Peter Howard, CEO of Realtime Robotics. “RapidPlan perfectly complements these efforts, enabling the programming, deployment and robot control to be optimized. Our intelligent tools dramatically reduce complexity and the potential for human error, both of which can rapidly increase the cost of deploying and operating industrial robots. We’re thrilled to apply this funding to our scaling and development efforts as we grow to meet the increased market demand.”

To capture a larger share of the market, manufacturers are putting a renewed emphasis on optimization, flexibility, retooling, and connecting processes from simulation to production. In fact, McKinsey & Company research recently found that software innovation has the potential to expand automotive industry revenue by $1.5 trillion in 2030. The need for a highly-skilled workforce, however, goes hand-in-hand with these transformative efforts. Because programming and integration can account for up to 50-70% of the cost of a robot application, innovative approaches to automation and robotics are needed for there to be a real impact on the bottom line.

“There is currently a perfect storm of economic and employment pressures within the manufacturing space. This is driving an industry-wide need to embrace new technologies and approaches to longstanding problems, to become more efficient and improve cost structures, while still delivering the products that consumers demand,” said Damian S. Kang, Executive Director & Team Lead, Global Equity Team, at Shinhan GIB. “Realtime’s technology is a perfect fit, allowing organizations to digitally plan robot usage while making the programming process faster and less complex.”

Realtime Robotics provides a powerful suite of software tools for programming robotic arms and the systems they are used in. Built on patented technology that fully automates the programming and execution of robot motions, Realtime’s tools cut out the most difficult and costly aspect of operating industrial robots. These tools span the whole system lifecycle, including digital twins, virtual commissioning, transfer to factory floor, run-time control, fail-safe maintenance, and rapid error recovery.

Recent Company Momentum

  • Realtime Robotics was named an official supplier for BMW Group, who uses its technology to speed robot programming time, autonomously generating collision-free robot movements.
  • Global automotive product and solution supplier The Schaeffler Group highlighted its use of RapidPlan to improve throughput and robot cell automation in a multi-robot bin-picking application.
  • Siemens and Realtime released a plug-in for Siemens Process Simulate, further building upon the companies’ long-standing partnership. The plug-in enables customers to incorporate RapidPlan into their regular workflow for added efficiency, and is available in addition to the standalone RapidPlan software.

“It takes years of deep engagement with a real industrial manufacturer to understand all their requirements and build against them,” added George Konidaris, co-founder and CTO of Realtime Robotics. “That very long tail of highly-specific, detail-oriented requirements is the thing that actually makes robotics products both hard and valuable, and is what most robotics startups just miss, either because they’re not familiar with real applications or because they are trying to build something very general first. We’re far along that journey and are seeing our sustained efforts result in customer success. It’s an exciting time.”

Juni 2023 in München stattfindet.

Realtime Robotics to Highlight Ability to Simplify Robot Programming Process and Enable Collaboration at Automatica 2023

Interactive Demos of Company’s RapidPlan Software, Used in an Industrial Assembly Application at the TestZone (Booth #A5.530) and in a Textile Application (Booth #B6.231)

BOSTON and MUNICH – June 13, 2023 Realtime Robotics, the leader in collision-free autonomous motion planning for industrial robots, today announced that it will be on-site at the upcoming Automatica 2023 trade show, taking place from June 27-30, 2023, in Munich, Germany.

There will be three opportunities for attendees to experience Realtime’s innovative motion control and collision avoidance technology on the show floor: an industrial assembly screw application in the TestZone, booth #A5.530; a textile demo cell in the booth of FANUC Deutschland GmbH, booth #B6.231; and a Schaeffler Special Machinery video highlighting the technology, airing in booth #A5.311:

  • In the Automatica TestZone, taking place in booth #A5.530, Realtime’s technology will be on display in an industrial assembly screw automation using two FANUC 200iD 7L robots, one ABB IRB 1200 5-90 robot, and one KUKA KR_6_R700 robot. Users will be able to control the robots using a touch pendant (sending robots to single targets at a time and then jogging the robots to see if there is a collision), changing the sequence of the program easily. The demo shows the power of Realtime’s RapidPlan to enable multi-robot coordination, collision-free programming, validation, testing and operations.
  • FANUC Deutschland GmbH, booth #B6.231, will host a demo cell which incorporates Realtime’s motion planning into a textile handling application from sewts GmbH. In the demo, sewts’ advanced image processing capabilities will be on display, highlighting how the technology can accurately identify the edges, contours, corners and other relevant features of a T-shirt. A robot, under the guidance of Realtime Robotics’ motion control technology, will use the insights from the image processing software to selectively pick up the T-shirt from specific points. This repetitive task will demonstrate the consistency and precision of sewts’ image processing algorithms as well as the flexibility and repeatability of robot motions when guided by Realtime.
  • In booth #A5.311, Realtime partner Schaeffler Special Machinery will air a video highlighting the company’s RapidPlan technology.

As the number of robots used in any given cell increases, the ability to quickly and cleanly move to the home position when needed also increases in importance. With RapidPlan, moving to the home position becomes very easy – there are no special strategies needed to ensure that the robots do not collide or get in each other’s way on the return path. No interlocks are needed in the process, which also makes it easy to expand the size of the cell and the amount of robots used within it. In camera-based systems, a single camera can send multiple poses to a common frame, and with RapidPlan, the robots are free to decide which one takes up the task based on a set of variables. Currently, these types of robot controls are difficult with conventional programming.

“The applications of our innovative RapidPlan robot motion control and collision avoidance software are endless, as can be seen in the demos here at Automatica 2023,” said Rafiq Iqbal, Director of European Business Development at Realtime Robotics. “We’re thrilled to be able to present these interactive demos with our close partners, highlighting just some of the ways that the logistics and manufacturing industry are integrating the latest technologies to transform the effectiveness and efficiency of their operations.”
