Risk-aware and receptive motion planning
The automation for navigating city streets available today is basic – able to manage GPS-style tasks, e.g. turn right at the next traffic light. True automation will come when the car is able to recognize and respond to unforeseen events like a child stepping off a curb or a bicyclist wandering out of the bike lane. What’s needed is risk aware motion planning, that allows the car to make motion plans at human speed and respond in real-time to unexpected events.
